Ferdinando Principiano
Piedmont, Italy
Ferdinando Principiano, a passionate young winemaker with deep family roots in Langhe, brings over twenty vintages of experience to his craft. His journey has led him to carve his unique path, departing from the '90s Barolo traditions. Ferdinando's commitment to sustainable farming goes beyond mere organic or biodynamic standards; he's developed his own holistic approach in harmony with the land and Nebbiolo grapes.
The estate spans 20 hectares, featuring prized old-vine parcels in Ravera di Monforte and Boscareto, along with Barbera, Dolcetto and the enigmatic Timorasso white grape. In the vineyard, he employs minimal intervention, using green manure for fertilization and sparingly applying copper and sulfur. To enhance biodiversity, a pond was built near the Boscareto vineyard, nurturing migratory birds and wildlife.
In the cellar, minimal intervention continues, with only slight sulfur additions at bottling. Vinification follows traditional methods, including long submerged-cap macerations and aging in older large wood barrels (20 to 40 hectoliters). Ferdinando's wines are a beautiful reflection of their origins—fresh, deep and complex, brimming with the vibrant energy he dedicates to his vineyards and nature.
