Matthias grew up in a small, family-owned winery. He spent time working with various other winemakers in Southern France and South Africa, most notably the famed South African natural winemaker behind Testalonga, Craig Hawkins, and later with Tom Lubbe, where his passion for natural wines grew steadily. Craig and Tom taught Matthias that great wines start in the vineyard, offering pure reflections of their terroir, and the unique qualities of the grapes grown there. He adopted this ethos in his own wines, working organically with natural ferments and as little human intervention as possible since he took over his father's vineyard in 2010. By his own admission, Matthias Warnung’s goal is to make and share the kind of wines that he himself loves to drink. His enthusiasm and passion are as electric as the expressive wines he creates!
